Restricted traffic zone and traffic: what to know before driving in Rome
Central Rome has one of the most extensive restricted traffic zones in Italy, active on weekdays with cameras that automatically fine unauthorised entries. If your goal is to see Piazza di Spagna and the centre, skip the car: the metro and walking cover everything better. If your goal is Tivoli or other Lazio destinations, renting makes sense — pick up the car outside the centre (airport or outskirts) and don't attempt to drive it into the restricted zone.
When it makes sense
For Tivoli (Villa d'Este and Villa Adriana), the Castelli Romani or the Lazio coast. Pick-up is best arranged at the airport or outskirts.
When it doesn't
For staying in Rome: the metro and walking cover the historic centre better than a car, without the risk of restricted-zone fines or getting stuck in traffic.
